THE FACT There are no baby showers, no picking of colours for their room or a family celebration on their first birthday … THE REALITY IS FEAR. The fear of not knowing how they will feed this child, the fear of going to the local hospital, the fear of knowing the child may not have its first birthday.
THE VISION HATN wants to alleviate these fears and Bring Back the Joy to the people of Mana by building an affordable, caring maternity health centre.
THE GOAL This centre will give the child a head start by providing pre and post natal care and education for the mother. HATN’s goal is to develop a model that will be mirrored across Mali.
ACTUAL STORIES FROM MANA 2011 Story #1 Recently a woman gave birth at Ouele, and was told she could go home with her baby. She walked with the new born baby back to Mana, and while walking she fell on her way; fortunately she was assisted by the gendarme (police) and taken back to the Ouele hospital.
Story #2 Another situation is about the Fulani man’s wife. When she was about to give birth there were no means of transportation to get to the hospital in Quele; so someone from Mana took her on his bike but before they reach Ouele she and the baby died. The man is a widow now.
Story #3 Some other time a woman had a dead baby in the womb, but without care it was not detected. She was taken to Ouele but it turned bad because the lady died few hours later when the doctor brought out the baby. She carried the dead baby for so long.
