What We Do - Bolivia

Bolivia is the poorest country in South America with a population of 9 million people.  As one of only two land-locked nations in South America , Bolivia is confronted with unique economic challenges as it struggles to compete with its neighbours.

With the highest indigenous population in the Americas, only 60 to 70% of Bolivia’s people speak Spanish, often as a second language.  Known for its friendly and warm people, Bolivian culture is strongly influenced by its two largest indigenous communities, the Quechua and Aymara peoples.

HATN is based in the city of Cochabamba, the third largest city in Bolivia.  Located at 2558 meters (8600 feet) above sea level, Cochabamba is in a valley of the Andes Mountains and is home to about 800,000 people.

In 2009, HATN begins work on a new project in the rural village of Quelcata, located in the department of Oruro at approximately 4000 meters above sea level. HATN is working with this farming community to re-build classrooms at the primary school. As well, HATN is completing a needs assessment to determine future goals and projects for this town.
