What We Do - Mali

Landlocked and among the poorest countries of the world, Mali is the largest country in West Africa.  The north-western region of Mali extends into the Sahara desert and is almost entirely arid desert, making it difficult for 80% of Mali's population who try to make a living through farming and fishing.  The majority of its 11 million people live along the area irrigated by the Niger River.

Undernourishment and limited access to safe drinking water are some of the issues faced by the Malian people.  In addition, the life expectancy of 45 years is dramatically affected by a high infant mortality rate, usually caused by preventable illness.

Mali's population is made up of a number of different peoples, with the Bambara people comprising the largest single segment. The majority of Mali's population is Muslim and the official language is French. However, Bambara is the language spoken by the largest number of people.

HATN works in the village of Mana, located about 100km south of the capital city of Bamako. This small village is largely comprised of subsistence farmers.
